Who made the news in 1953?

WE are hoping to put a few more names to faces on this pair of pictures taken during the 1953 Millom carnival parade.
They were kindly supplied by Doug Holmes, of Church Walk, Millom, and show a presentation to fancy dress contestants at the town’s cricket club.
The only names we know from the top picture are the three young women handing out the gifts. From left, they are Dorothy Shaw, the 1953 carnival queen Audrey Nesham and June Cunningham.
Can anyone name the young lad with his Evening Mails who would now be around 65?
On the bottom picture, we know the woman third from left at the back is Alverta Boyle.
Her daughter, Pauline, is in a dark dress waiting for her gift behind Korky the Kat.
