Vintage transport world on its way

TODAY and tomorrow cark airfield, Flookburgh, will be packed with enthusiasts for the music of fairground organs, the roar of vintage vehicle engines and the smell of hot oil.

To mark the holding of the Cumbria Steam gathering we have turned the clock back to 1988 and 1990 for this set of Evening Mail archive pictures.

There will be around 1,200 exhibits in this 40th anniversary show. Some will have travelled only a few miles to go on display while others come from all over the country.

Getting there can take quite a while.

In 1988 one of the giant steam-powered traction engines took 11-and-a-half hours to cover the 37 miles from Morecambe.

It took more than 800lb of coal and 200 gallons of water to complete the journey.

Today, the show’s anniversary will be celebrated by the arrival of 40 Model T Fords from an owners’ group called the Model T Ford register of Great Britain.

Both days feature Richard Savoury’s Sheep Show and the thrills and spills of contests staged by the North West Lawn Mower Racing Association.

The show is open from 9am to 5pm on both days.
