Teacher gets her souvenir
Published at 16:34, Monday, 20 August 2012
THE former teacher Anne Burdekin was featured on the August 6 Memories Page after spotting relatives in vintage pictures of the bell ringers at St James’ Church in Barrow.
Since then we have tracked down a picture from the day when she retired as headmistress at St James’ Infant School in July 1982.
Pupils presented her with a souvenir chair which has been used by children at the school in the early 1900s.
Staff presented her with a gold sovereign on a chain and the governors provided a carriage clock.
Mrs Burdekin and her husband Jim, the former Barrow deputy town clerk, later moved to Cleveland in Brisbane, Australia.
Her replacement as head at the school was Marilyn Taylor.
