Taking the chance to look round historic mill
Published at 13:01, Wednesday, 11 July 2012
THE North West Association of Civic Trust Societies supports one building seen as being at risk each year.
Last year it was Lytham Hall and this year the focus turns to the Grane Mill at Haslingden which featured recently on the BBC2 Heritage Heroes show with John Craven and Jules Hudson.
The association has no funds so is trying to raise the profile of the building by holding a major event there.
Grane Mill dates from 1907 and was nearly lost when Redrow applied to demolish it for flats in 2003.
It is a rare remaining intact example of the machinery which powered the textile industry throughout the North West.
Its engine, boilers and chimney have been given scheduled ancient monument status at the request of Rossendale Civic Trust.
The site owner decided to save the manager’s office and one of the weaving sheds which make a fascinating group of buildings – all now in need of some major refurbishment.
The engine is now in the care of Heritage Trust for the North West and is being slowly restored by a small dedicated band of volunteers.
The cost of the day is £15 and starts with lunch at 12.30pm.
A spokesman for the Civic Trust Association said: “The protection of our built heritage is vitally important and we would appreciate any donations you may wish to make for this cause. “Anything which helps to make an impact on the preservation of properties has to be of benefit.”
Bookings for the event can be made through the treasurer, Brian Gilbert, at 434 Holcombe Road, Helmshore, Rossendale, BB4 4LX.
