Rugby league star went to see 1948 Olympics

IT seems that plenty of Furness people took the opportunity to see part of the Olympic Games when it last came to London in 1948.
The Memories Page has already featured a ticket which was brought home as a souvenir by a Furness sporting fan.
Today we have details from the programme for the athletic events held at what was officially called the Empire Stadium, Wembley.
It was brought back to Barrow by the late Dinks Harris, who played for the town's professional rugby league club, and was kindly loaned by Maureen Harris of Raleigh Street.
She said: “Dinks went to the 1948 games in London. I think Barrow Rugby Club went.
“Of course it would only be the track events that interested him.
“The programme had a red, white and blue sun burst cover but it just fell to bits.”
Mr Harris saw some of the key athletics events including the American H Dillard winning the 100m final.
Mr Harris recorded all the results in his programme, including the 10.3sec run by Dillard to equal the Olympic record set by Jessie Owens in 1936.
Some think that Jamaican Usain Bolt could run almost a second quicker in this year’s Olympic final.
He also got to see the final of the 400m hurdles where another American, R.B Cochran, beat the Olympic record with a winning time of 51.1 seconds.
