Queens of England and rushbearing meet at ancient school

URSWICK gave the Queen a welcome to remember in May 1985 when hundreds of people surrounded the 400-year-old grammar school hours before the royal party was due to arrive.

She was led into a classroom where pupils in period costumes gave a display of Elizabethan dancing and showed her displays based on the school’s long and distinguished history.

John Bone, of Baycliff and Patrick Cane, of Stainton, showed her a model of a 16th century mansion.

John, then aged nine, said: “The Queen said it must have taken a long time to make but I told her it didn’t. I will always remember talking to the Queen.”

She was also introduced to Urswick rushbearing queen Sharon Thompson.

The visit was rounded off with a display of maypole dancing.
