New military might makes quite a splash

THE giant steel shape of HMS Invincible looming over the tops of Barrow’s streets was a familiar sight in the 1970s.

The command cruiser was the largest ship built for the Royal Navy since the 1950s and was launched by the Queen on June 3 in 1977.

It had a full crew of 1,000, together with Marines, helicopters and Harriers.

The Mail noted: “There was a hushed silence from the crowd as a jet Harrier approached Invincible at quite a low height, hovering like a humming bird, then gradually turning on its tail, releasing all its tremendous power, and then soaring skywards”
