Local history groups get fair venue
Last updated at 15:25, Monday, 09 July 2012
THE Beacon, Copeland Borough Council’s museum at Whitehaven, is planning its 2012 Local History Fair and is offering local and family history societies throughout Cumbria the opportunity to take a stall.
This year’s event takes place on Saturday October 6 starting at 10am and finishing at 4.30pm.
Alan Gillon, learning officer at the Beacon, said: “We have chosen to hold our event separately to the national Heritage Open Days Festival which takes place in early September.
“This is because we want to give as many societies as possible the chance to get involved without missing out on the many great events that happen for Heritage Open Days.”
The Beacon event gives societies a useful opportunity to contact others who are interested in local history and spread the word about their group and recruit members.
It is also a chance for the public to begin their journey into family or local history, learn more about their area and for them to have an enjoyable day out with their families.
Societies wishing to get involved should contact the Beacon on 01946 592302, or send an e-mail to thebeacon@copeland.gov.uk.
The Beacon is also taking part in the national Heritage Open Days Festival by offering heritage trails on Saturday September 7.
These have been arranged in partnership with Haig Colliery Mining Museum and Whitehaven’s Colourful Coast.
The trails will be free but advance booking is essential to avoid disappointment.
More details will be available shortly on The Beacon’s website at www.thebeacon-whitehaven.co.uk
