Life in the country

NEXT Wednesday is the Evening Mail sponsored North Lonsdale Show and to mark the event we have turned the clock back 25 years to the show held in 1987.
It was the first time the event had been held on the current showfield at Bardsea Park, near Ulverston.
In previous years the show had been held at Dragley Beck until the land was needed for the Ulverston outdoor leisure development.
A Hartleys Brewery dray led the grand procession at the 1987 show, followed by the supreme champion Friesian cow, Denmire Present 14, shown by John Dennison, of Broughton.
Newton Women’s Institute won the best in show award in the marquees for an interpretation of Bond Street in the floral art class.
Ulverston rose expert Fred Barnes won the major horticultural diploma for his vase of roses.
The Cagebird Society was celebrating its centenary and secretary Vince Jones was pleased to see more than 50 entries.
Champion bird was a parrot-like sun conure shown by Maurice Evans, of Ulverston, who had pet shops in Ulverston and Barrow.
Classes in the 2012 show start at 8.30am and feature everything from cattle, sheep and horses to horticultural and children’s classes.
