Bold nuclear era starts at shipyard

WHEN the Queen came to Barrow on October 21 in 1960 to launch Britain’s first nuclear-powered submarine it marked the start of a new era for the shipyard.
It was a bold move for Barrow which continues to bear dividends but at the time Britain didn’t even have the capability to produce a reactor suitable to fit in a submarine.
That was soon to change with Dreadnought showing the government what could be achieved with £20m and a lot of shipyard skills.
