SHAKESPEARE'S most famous play will enjoy a three-day run in the Lake District this month.

The Old Laundry Theatre in Bowness brings the Shakespeare Globe’s award-winning small-scale touring company to Blackwell Arts & Craft House with a brand new production of Romeo & Juliet .

Performing in the outdoor setting from Monday 20 to Wednesday 22, at 7pm each night, the show is directed by Dominic Dromgoole, supported by the young director Tim Hoare.

Romeo & Juliet will be a fresh and new exploration of Shakespeare’s greatest love story. A violent street brawl between their rival families is the prelude to Romeo’s first encounter with Juliet. Despite this, and the fact Juliet has been promised to another, they fall in love. But any plans for their future happiness are cruelly destroyed by renewed violence between their families and tragedy begins to unfold.

A small troupe of travelling players will be taking to the road with Shakespeare’s classic tale of star-crossed lovers, breathing new life into one of the greatest of all love stories. Using an Elizabethan style booth stage – inspired by paintings and etchings from Shakespeare’s time when touring was prevalent – eight actors will visit the stunning setting of Lake Windermere with this scaled-down production.

The actors will be doubling up roles in this fast paced adaptation and will be breaking the boundaries between the stage and the audience.

This very special outdoor performance at Blackwell Arts and Crafts House near Bowness has the most majestic backdrop of the Coniston Fells and Lake Windermere giving the audience a breath-taking experience. The shows will take place in all but the most extreme weather conditions. The audience should bring their own seating and a picnic. Grounds open from 6pm with free parking and refreshments available.

Tickets are available now from The Old Laundry Theatre box office.
