A CONCERT experience like no other comes to Ulverston this weekend.

Elvis Presley’s legendary ‘68 Comeback Special will be screened in its entirety at the Roxy Cinema on Sunday.

The event commemorates the 50th anniversary of the special which heralded the “comeback” on an artist who had never been away as far as loyal friends were concerned. The screening also coincides with the 41st anniversary of the death of the man who sold a billion records despite the fact that his only appearances outside of the United States were in Canada.

The Comeback Special was Elvis Presley’s first television appearance for seven years, clad in black leather and playing with a full band in front of an intimately small audience.

The show also pioneered an “unplugged” section which, if nothing else, showed the power of his voice and his magnetism.

It has been said since that it was the Comeback Special that gave Elvis the confidence to step away from the stereotype Hollywood had created through 31 mostly mediocre films and get back to the live concerts that had started his career. From then until his death he continued touring, returning to Vegas for regular stints.

As well as the 90-minute concert, Sunday’s event will include newly produced content about the King and a piece on how the documentary was made.

Sunday’s screening starts at 5pm, and tickets are available from the Roxy’s box office.
