Young driver injured in Barrow bingo hall crash

A CAR crashed into a bingo hall following reports of a race.

It is understood police are investigating allegations that two cars were racing in Hindpool Road, Barrow, immediately before the accident.

A blue Citroen Saxo smashed into the side of Apollo Bingo and Social Club, in Hindpool Road, near Hollywood Park, bringing down a brick column, shortly after 5pm. An ambulance crew attended to the male driver who is understood to have had minor injuries.

A Barrow woman, 30, who arrived after the crash said: “The lad from the car was sat at the side. He was shook up getting into the ambulance. There was blood all over his arm.”

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said the driver was out of the car when they arrived and they were making the car, building and overall scene safe.

Watch manager, firefighter Mark Ducie, said there had been reports of cars speeding along the road and it is understood police are now investigating these allegations.

People inside the bingo hall reported hearing a loud bang and rushing outside to see the damaged car alongside the side wall.

Manager Paul Holland said: “It made a massive thud. We thought the ceiling had come down and then we went outside.

“I’ve heard that people in the vehicles behind claimed two cars had been racing each other from the traffic lights.

“The firefighters have looked at the building and everything seems fine. We are also getting someone out to look at it.”

Have your say

I LOVE reading the comments page on here, but it's always stories about motorists that make me laugh the most. They seem to bring out contradictions galore apart from anything else.
In response to this story we have comments like
"Get some speed cameras", "book the people not using the roundabout properly" generally every wrong doing motorist should be hung it seems.
Then we have last weeks tale about the traffic cops stopping 300 motorists in a day and seizing a load for a variety of offences. Comments that night.. "Have they got nothing better to do", "What I am I gonna do if a drunk shows up on my road, no cops again". They're damned if they do, they're damned if they don't it seems?
And as for the comment "more patrols ..." where from exactly? Do you not read the papers? Police numbers are going down not up - cut by thousands across the Country. There isn't a box under the stairs at the local nick with a few more in, just in case persecuting motorists is the order of the day. THERE are no more patrols - the ones that are there are disappearing up their own backsides dealing with all manner of calls from the Barrovian public.
