Ulverston supermarket showdown – decision on Sainsbury's and Robinsons due today

A DECISION over the long-running supermarket saga in Ulverston will be made today as Sainsbury's and Robinsons go head to head.

Dozens of members of the public are eagerly waiting as South Lakeland District Council's planning committee will vote on both applications at a meeting this morning.

Planners have recommended members reject the Sainsbury's plans for greenfield land at the Beehive – but approve the application to build a supermarket at the former Robinsons brewery site.

Evening Mail reporter Paul Berentzen is at the meeting. Follow him on Twitter for live updates: @PBerentzenNWEM

Have your say

I think that Robinsons do know who is going on the site and I think it will probably be Aldi or Lidl, no-one else has shown any interest, and, it's a perfect size for one of their stores. And as for a " high-end " store I think they've just been muddying the waters to make it appear more attractive, Aldi and Lidl are good reasonably priced quality stores, granted they have a limited range but you can buy more in one of their stores than you can in any of the supermarkets in the centre of Ulverston. I think the supermarket will appear on the doorstep of the KUS sooner than they think !!

The only thing to change in Ulverston in the past 20 years is the 1 way system, half day closing on a Wednesday during a recession says it all. Small town, small ideas, nothing for the young, the place is going nowhere. Closed doors, small minded, still..top bench is nice.
