Two people arrested following suspected Barrow arson incident

POLICE have arrested two people on suspicion of arson following a fire at a Barrow home.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue were called to a two-storey property at Storey Square at 2.30am on Saturday.

Six firefighters used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire and were on the scene until 3.55am.

No-one was home at the time of the fire and no-one was injured.

The blaze started in a lean-to and spread to the lounge, but was contained to the ground floor.

A neighbour told the Evening Mail they were evacuated for safety reasons while crews dealt with the blaze.

The neighbour, who did not wish to be named, was asleep with his wife when they were woken up by the emergency services. He said: “We had to be evacuated at about 2.30am and kept in the street. We were kept out until just
before 4am.”

Stuart Dolan, Barrow Fire Station manager, said: “The fire initially started outside in a make-shift lean-to attached to the building.

“Because of the severity of the fire, it entered the building through the rear lounge window and the rear lounge was absolutely devastated.

“It (the lean-to) was full of wood and combustible material and that has allowed it to take hold and, such was the intensity of it, it broke through the double-glazed window.”

  • A man, 28, and a woman, 33, were arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and have been bailed pending further police enquiries.

A spokesman for Barrow CID said police were not looking to speak to anyone else in connection with the incident.
