Snow causing hazardous driving conditions in Barrow and South Cumbria

TRAFFIC flow is returning to normal in Barrow tonight following a chaotic few hours on some roads.

90% of peaple cant drive forword in good conditions let alone in wet or snoweup roads, mad aS A BOX OF FROGS.

In the past:

When it snowed people didn't travel unless they had to.
When it snowed, employers were understanding of the situation.
When it snowed, people walked carefully and wore welly boots.
When it snowed, everyone cleared their own driveway, and often groups of people would work together to clear their street.

Nowadays:

When it snows, people seem to think they have a "right" to a cleared, salted road 24/7, regardless of conditions.
When it snows, employers make no allowances for circumstances.
When it snows, mass hysteria descends upon the media (maybe we have too much media, and not enough stories - but that's a debate for another day).

If we want the snow clearing instantly and totally every time, as well as all floods immediately cleaned up, etc., etc., etc., we can have that. Of course, we'd probably all have to pay £10,000 per annum council tax.

Or we could just get the snow shovel out, clear the drive, only travel when necessary, and be sensible....

regardless of which town or city, this country can no longer cope with a covering of snow.
Be it schools, transport,or practically any form of hardship for a couple of days this country crumbles to hysteria.
Perhaps the none stop manic media of TV
weather reporting is institutionlising this country into one of self doubt and tollerence of all weather conditions.

Great fun in my car last nut drifting hours of fun

I had hours of entertainment when Park Road closed. Numptys trying to get up bank lane considering it was covered in snow. 40% of the people trying to get up turned back and the majority of those who did were four wheel drive.

Saw some amazingly stupid driving last night, mainly cars driving too close to the one in front and driving too fast. Someone coming towards me last night going too fast lost complete control on a bend and was on my side of the road, bounced off two sides of the road and carried on. Learn to drive you numpty !

Also, Ziggy agree with yes 4x4s are very useful BUT they dnt get you guaranteed grip or ability. A front wheel drive car with winter tyres driven properly will outperform a 4x4 on normal tyes. Sadly a lot of 4x4 drivers think they are invincible in bad weather.

Drive safe folks.

Jamie why would 'toy 4x4' drivers want to leave the tarmac? The idea is to increase your odds of staying on it, particularly in snow. The modern 4x4 crossovers are great, they automatically shift torque to the wheels that have traction - a wonderful safety feature. I did a difficult 50-mile journey in snow last night in a crossover vehicle with no bother, the only time we stopped was to help others or where there was a build up of less capable vehicles. The times they are a-changing and so are the cars we drive.

The main trouble is that morden tyres are designed for good conditions only, there these Eco friendly perfect condition things unlike 15-20yrs ago when they had a bit of cut to them. As for a lot of supposed toy 4x4s the drivers need to learn how to drive them properly off the Tarmac. Less right foot, use the right gears, less use of the brakes, smooth use of all controls. Unfortunately learner s are only taught the system to pass the test not how drive in challenging conditions after all as soon as conditions change from anything perfect all driving tests are canceled.
