Rescue teams recovered a man's body at 3pm yesterday, following a two day operation.

And today they have confirmed that it is the body of Mark Westall, who had been missing since January 23.

A police spokeswoman said: "At 1.20pm on Saturday, police were called to an area on the sands at Greenodd, Ulverston, after a member of the public reported a sighting of what they believed to be a body in the water.

"Police officers, Walney coastguard, Bay rescue and Ulverston inshore rescue all attended. Due to lighting and dangerous tides, the recovery was postponed overnight and the body was recovered on Sunday.

"Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death but do not believe that there are any suspicious circumstances at this stage."

Mr Westall, who was 44, of North Lonsdale Road, was last seen at 9.30pm on January 23.

Search parties  combed Ulverston and surrounding areas and divers searched the stretch of water to the north of the railway line and Ulverston canal in an attempt to locate him.

His jacket was found near the railway line in the Plumpton area on February 2. Police also issued a campaign on the social networking site, Twitter, in a bid to trace Mr Westall.

The spokeswoman added that Mr Westall's family had been informed.
