Tributes to Cumbria artist - as son appears in Barrow court accused of murder

A SON appeared in a Barrow court charged with murdering his mother in a Lake District hamlet.
Robert Adam Pierre Archbold, of Outgate, near Hawkshead, appeared at Furness Magistrates’ Court on Friday charged with murdering his 77-year-old mother Jane Archbold.
Archbold, 48, was wearing a navy blue sweater and white T-shirt with trousers and nodded from the dock to confirm his name, age and address.
He entered no plea and was remanded in custody.
Police said Ms Archbold died on Tuesday after being assaulted and attempts by paramedics to resuscitate her were unsuccessful. Ms Archbold was described locally as a well-respected vet and an accomplished potter.
Neighbour and county councillor Claire Salisbury said Ms Archbold was a “lovely” person and a talented artist.
She said: “She was incredibly artistic, a very, very talented lady. I knew her partly because she was a vet and I am a vet and she used to come into our tea room from time to time. It is not the sort of thing you expect in this sort of area.
“She was just such a lovely lady.”
Ms Archbold took up pottery around the time she qualified as a vet but once she had her own practice, she gave it up until she retired.
Her work was exhibited at the Ruskin Museum in Coniston and later offered for sale in the store.
Museum curator Vicky Slowe said: “Jane’s pots have been very much admired. They have quite a following and some have gone to Japan.
“They are a fine memorial to her interests and capability. Jane was very much loved and will be sorely missed.”
Police were alerted to the incident at 10pm on Tuesday after an assault was reported and a search was launched, which
involved police dogs and a search helicopter.
Archbold was arrested at 12.41am on Wednesday and taken to Kendal police station.
He was questioned by detectives on Wednesday evening and charged with murder on Thursday.
He will appear at Carlisle Crown Court on September 3.
