He can now be named as Graham Whitwam who was 53-years-old and from Paddock in Huddersfield.

The collision occured just before 6am on Saturday 15 September between a white Transit type van and a car transporter driven by Mr Whitwam between junction 35 and the services on the M6 Nortbound carriageway.

The female passenger in the transporter was injured in the collision but has now been released from hospital after receiving treatment for minor injuries.

Police believe the van has crashed into the rear of the transporter, causing it to roll.

A police spokesman confirmed a 46-year-old man from Warwickshire was arrested shortly afterwards and questioned in custody by officers.

Chief Inspector Tim Leeson is investigating the crash and said on Saturday: "We are currently trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision and we would appeal to anyone with any information to come forward.

"We believe that the collision occurred just before 6am this morning and so I would appeal to anyone who may have been travelling along the M6 around that time that may have witnessed anything to contact us if they have not already done so by calling 101 and quoting log number 0479."

The incident disrupted traffic, with tailbacks reaching back to the J32.

Have your say

What a dreadful thing to happen. We were travelling north on the M6 on that day and were caught up in the traffic jam.when the road was partially opened,we drove past the scene...nothing could have prepared me for the sight of the wreckage. We knew then that someone had died..it was very upsetting to witness the reality of the crash. But not as upsetting and devestating as it is for this poor man's family and friends. Our belated condolences to all.
