List of problems with Barrow built submarine revealed

A REPORT has been leaked revealing a series of problems dogging a Barrow built submarine.

The Guardian newspaper has reported that the first-of-class Astute submarine cannot 'sprint' away from attacks, a vital element of the hunter-killer submarine.

A list of errors have been revealed including corrosion on the boat, a number of circuit boards being replaced due to safety concerns, concerns being raised about instruments monitoring the nuclear reactor because the wrong type of lead was used and concerns about the pioneering periscope which uses a HD video feed to view the surface.

The Ministry of Defence told the paper Astute has experienced 'teething problems' but said this was not unusual for a first-of-class vessel, though it could not comment on problems with speed but added Astute would "provide an outstanding capability for decades to come."

Full report in tomorrow's edition of the Evening Mail.

Have your say

Well whatever may or may not be right with this boat or its design there is no way on earth anyone connected with the MOD is going to admit to anything is there?

First of class submarines always have and always will have problems to iron out. Its not a car you cant build a prototype. That's the whole point of Contacter Sea Trials. Somebody somewhere writing an artical with no knowledge of submarine building whatsoever looking for a cheap story.
