South Lakes art festival is without doubt worth seeing

AN interactive art festival showcasing some of the country’s finest emerging talent takes place in the Lake District this weekend.

The free two-day Sine Dubio Festival of Art comes to Low Wood Bay, on the shores of Windermere, on Saturday and Sunday, and features live art by sculptors and painters, talks by art professors, as well as other interactive elements including workshops, and a life-drawing class.

Organised by new South Lakes art group Sine Dubio – which translates as ‘without doubt’ in Latin – is the brainchild of 26-year-old Sophia Newton of Bowness. The festival also acts as a launch event for the business, which she runs with local entrepreneur Mike Marczynski.

She says: “The festival will be a lot more than your standard art exhibition. The aim is to break down barriers and get people involved by making it more dynamic and interactive.

“We have got great art heritage in this area but some younger people think that it is inaccessible to them. However, we want to help everyone feel that they can come along, meet and speak to artists and really get engaged with art.”

The festival will champion the work of 15 artists, nine of whom are local, including renowned sculptress Josefina de Vasconcellos, a Brazilian who moved to live in the area. The festival will feature work by Vasconcellos previously held in a private collection.

Other local artists include Graham Twyford, a landscape artist, Ulverston’s Kevin Chester, an oil and canvas painter, Penni Simpson, a glass artist, Andy Levi, a wood sculptor and Jamie Barnes, a Kendal-based print maker.

Entry to the festival, which runs between 10am and 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, is free.
