Roasts that warm the cockles keep the customers coming back for more

THE Ship Inn is popular with people looking for good food at affordable prices.

And proprietor Cyril Whiteside believes that it his menu of British classics that warm the “cockles of your heart” that keep people coming back for more.

He said: “Trade at The Ship is very much food-led. We are situated on a road to nowhere, so we get no passing trade – we are a destination outlet for people looking for a good meal.

“Our roasts are our specialty and my signature dishes, Chicken Annabelle and Steak Brooklyn, are also very popular.

“We have a very varied menu that is always changing.”

Since moving to Biggar in 1988, Cyril has worked in a handful of different establishments, awarding him the title of the longest serving licensee in Barrow.

“I have been at the Ship Inn for seven years now, but I have also worked at the Queens Arms at Biggar village and the Queens Arms on Rawlinson Street, which was a live music venue.

“It was great being a landlord in the boom time, when the Trident was being built.

“Pubs are much quieter nowadays.”

Although Cyril has noticed that there are less people visiting their local pub on a regular basis, he is grateful for the familiar faces in the Ship.

“I have a few locals who pop in for a drink at around 4pm on their way home from work to watch Sky Sports and I also have a darts team who pop in every Thursday evening.

“We are a real community pub.”

The Ship Inn hosts a weekly quiz night every Friday at 9.30pm. Entry is £1 and there is a free supper with all entries.

Real ales include Robinson’s Unicorn and the Cumbrian Way.
