Parkrun

Barrow parkrun, event 59, Saturday November 10

S93433B
EXERCISE: Participants taking part in the weekly 5km Barrow parkrun

AFTER last week’s horrendous weather conditions this Saturday started off slightly better with no rain. Unfortunately, by 9.10am the rain had started and 10 minutes later the hailstones joined in.

But it wouldn’t be Barrow parkrun without the brave bunch of runners and volunteers dodging the rain and puddles on a Saturday morning.

It certainly makes you smile when you see a group of volunteers huddled under a tree cheering you on and still smiling, so thank you to all you brave people.

Saturday saw 57 runners, including five first timers and parkrun tourists from Hull. We hope you enjoyed our ‘undulating’ course, it’s certainly a challenge. There were representatives from six running clubs and even though the weather was not brilliant 11 people managed to record a personal best, so a massive congratulations to you all.

This week’s personal best times were achieved by: Tony Murray, Andrew Hill, Georgia Cooper, Julia Jackson, Nicholas Brown, Paul William Crisp, Donna Kay Speirs, Peter Rowlinson, Rebecca Jones, Jennifer Fazackerley and Diane Donohue.

Next week Barrow parkrun is going to participate in a ‘naked’ parkrun.

Before you all suddenly come up with loads of excuses not to run, it just means you pledge to run or walk without music, IPod, watch, Garmin or other timing devices.

If you are up for the challenge of not knowing your time until you receive the ‘magic text’ then go for it next Saturday.

David Harker was first over the line in 19:31 – his ninth win in 38 appearances.

Daniel Pocklington was second in 19:51 and Tony Murray came third in 19:57.

Sarah Grisdale was first female home in 22:36 – her fourth win in 39 appearances.

Georgia Cooper, of Barrow & Furness Striders AC, was second in 22:37 and Karen Ann Maggio-Poyntz was third in 23:08.

If you would like to run, jog or walk next Saturday please remember to register at http://www.parkrun.org.uk/register/barcode, print off your barcode and arrive at the bandstand at 8.45am for the pre-run briefing. Parkrun is not a race, so please come along and have a go.

There are a wide range of ages including children in buggies being pushed and dogs running on leads with their owners.

After the run we meet for a drink at the park cafe.

Everyone is welcome to come along and have a drink and chat. See you next Saturday
