Come to the Barrow Zumba party

A BARROW fitness instructor is offering a new dance class aimed at seniors, beginners and others needing modifications in their exercise routine. RACHEL HERMOLLE talks to Teresa Dixon about her Zumba Gold sessions

COMBINING an exciting mix of Latin moves and feel good party music, Zumba fitness has become a popular choice among women who want fitness to be fun.

But for those returning to exercise, or who struggle to keep up with the pace, Barrow fitness instructor, Teresa Dixon, is offering an easier option.

Zumba Gold takes the popular Latin-dance inspired workout of Zumba and modifies the moves and pacing to suit the needs of the active older participant, as well as those just starting their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle.

The class builds cardiovascular health by challenging the heart and working the muscles of the hips, legs and arms with dance moves.

Despite being slightly slower than an original Zumba session, Zumba Gold still retains many of the same elements including zesty Latin music, and a party-like atmosphere.

Former Latin dancer, Teresa explains: “Zumba Gold is ideal for people who are new to exercise or those who struggle to keep up with my faster paced Zumba classes.

“It still incorporates Latin moves and fantastic feel good music from around the world but the pace is much slower, and I make sure that my class take regular breaks.

“If I see someone getting out of breath I will encourage them to take a break and get a drink. It doesn't matter what Maureen is doing at the other side of the room, everyone has to work to their own ability.”

As well as offering simple-to-follow dance moves, Teresa’s sessions also give participants a chance to socialise once the class has finished.

“At the end of Zumba Gold classes there is the option to have a cup of tea and a biscuit, which is different from my other Zumba sessions, Teresa said.

Adding: “As I have quite a few elderly ladies attending my classes I think it is important to give them a chance to chat and socialise as they may not get out much during the week.

“I have seen many friendships formed from Zumba.”

Before undertaking training to become a Zumba instructor, Teresa worked in domiciliary care for older adults, which she believes has helped with her new career.

She said: “I have always enjoyed helping people. It is such a pleasure to teach Zumba Gold and watch people’s fitness and confidence improve.

“I began by teaching regular Zumba, but noticed that a few people were struggling to keep up and decided to offer a class that was better suited to their needs.

“My classes have been very successful and proved that their is a demand for Zumba Gold in the area.”
