Ben set to go the distance in the Keswick to Barrow

A RECORD number of walkers are taking part in this year’s C2B, a 23-mile walk which has opened up the event to younger participants.

The C2B was introduced in 2010 as an easier version of the K2B and has gone from strength to strength, with all 600 available places filled for the first time this year.

Ten-year-old Ben Higham, a pupil at Pennington School, is taking part for the first time this year.

We catch up with Ben, from Dalton, to find out how he’s preparing for his first long distance walk.

Who’s in your team?

There’s 12 of us. My friend Archie, my mum’s friends and family friends. We’re called the Ginger Ninjas.

How do you keep fit?

I play out and play rugby for Ulverston, but I’m moving to Askam soon.

When do you start training?

We started training about four weeks ago. My brother, Chris Tyson, is doing the Keswick to Barrow with a team from Millom for the North West Air Ambulance. Every Saturday we go running at the Barrow parkrun. In the holidays we go jogging. We do 10 to 15 mile walks and we’re going to start doing 20 mile walks. We go walking in the Lake District. I like walking, it’s alright. I’m training with my uncle Ted. He’s in my team.

Do you have any training advice?

Having done the K2B twice before Chris said: “Do plenty of training. Don’t think it will be alright on the day, it won’t. I didn’t train and I was worse for wear.”

How do you think you’ll do on the day?

I’m going to be puffed out. I think all my team is going to make it.

What will be the highlight of the day?

I’m looking forward to getting my medal.

Who are you raising money for?

I’m raising money for St Mary’s Hospice because they need money. Chris told me about them. I wanted to do it for a local charity for people with cancer.
