MILLOM station is earmarked for improvements in the latest plans for investment in cycling schemes, announced by transport minister Norman Baker MP.
The station, operated by Northern Rail, will see the addition of 10 covered cycle stands, with CCTV coverage and improved signage, as part of a £200,000 wave of investment across the North West.
Northern Rail’s client and stakeholder manager, Craig Harrop, said: “Transport minister Norman Baker’s investment announcement has been welcomed by cyclists in the region. This will bring great benefits to our passengers and is thanks to the £15m boost to the Community Linking Places Fund, which supports schemes to improve cycle-rail integration. We hope these improvements help to encourage more passengers to travel to and from our stations on two wheels.”
Mr Baker said: “We are serious about cycling, as this latest wave of funding shows. We have already seen how schemes can quickly deliver economic and environmental benefits, as well as improving public health.
“Anyone who rides a bike will know it is important to keep the impetus going and this record level of funding will provide a shot in the arm to cycling in England. Our ambition is to get people cycling more safely and more often and today’s announcements will help us to make that vision a reality.”

The cycle stands that are already there are never used so what's the point of adding more. Better sheltering and seating is needed for passengers not bikes. Also the provision of toilets would be a much better way of improving the station. Millom station is poorly equipped for the amount of people using it. Tv style monitors would be of use too, as the lazy so and so in the signal box can't usually be bothered to announce that a train will be late or cancelled!

Have your say
Brilliant, that'll solve the real problems with Northern Rail such as regular delayed trains, cancellations and even the lack of storage for bikes on Northern Rail carriage stock
