Heavy rain forecast for Cumbria

FORECASTERS have warned of further heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday.

Residents and businesses are being warned to prepare for possible surface water flooding.

South Lakeland District Council have confirmed that sandbags are available for the public to collect from the depots at North Lonsdale Road, Ulverston and Ecclerigg Depot, Windermere.

All the depots are open Monday to Friday from 8am until 4pm.

Forecasters warned that in some parts of the UK almost a month's worth of rain is expected to fall in two days.

An amber alert covers much of north-east England, where the Met Office has warned there could be flooding and disruption on Friday and Saturday.

More than 60mm (2.4 inches) of rain is expected to fall in 36 hours in some areas, approaching the 69.9mm (2.8 inches) UK average rainfall for the month of July. The average July rainfall for the north of England is 64.4mm (2.5 inches).

Rain is expected to fall in much of the UK on Friday, with less severe yellow warnings issued for eastern, northern and central areas of England and Wales and parts of southern Scotland.

A Met Office spokesman said Friday's rain would be "prolonged, quite persistent and heavy".

Have your say

Why should south lakeland council have to provide sandbags but Barrow council does nothing?! I will now have to wait (and risk my house getting flooded) until Friday to go to Ulverston to collect some sand bags as I work past 4 o'clock....thats if they will even let me have some as Im not an ulverston resident.

The attitude from Barrow council when asking for sand bags was disgusting and their only advise to me was "well you will have to buy some" ...It makes you wonder why you pay council tax!
