Dad said ‘marriage won’t last’

PAT and Jack Turnough celebrate 60 years of marriage next weekend on June 2, an achievement which Pat’s dad would no doubt be surprised by.

She explains: “My dad said Jack was a spiv and said the marriage wouldn’t last but we’ve proved him wrong!”

Jack, whose family are from Barrow, met Pat at a dance at the New Brighton Ballroom on the Wirral, when he was working in Merseyside after being invalided out of the Royal Navy.

They were both teenagers at the time and Pat’s father insisted on them waiting till she was 21 before they tied the knot and moved to Barrow.

Compared to today’s lavish wedding celebrations, Pat says their wedding was a simple, but happy, day: “We got married at St Mary’s Church on Walney and had a reception at the little community hut in Vickerstown Park. Our honeymoon was a trip to Roanhead for an ice cream!”

The couple, both 80, will be celebrating their big day with a family party.

“We have three sons and eight grandchildren, with another on the way. The whole family will be at the party apart from three of the grandchildren who will be abroad,” says Pat.

Despite being married for 60 years, the couple agree that the “time has flown” by and Pat says: “We are as much in love now as we were when we first got married.”
