Couple’s courage and generosity

PROVING that age and disability are no barrier to achieving lifelong ambitions, Colin Glew lept 14,000ft out of a plane when he was 80.

It was a parachute jump he’d trained for at 18 when he joined the Royal Engineers, but was denied for so many years after losing his leg in a friendly fire incident at 19 in the Second World War.

The money he raised in sponsorship was donated to the Royal Preston Hospital to provide five wheelchairs, which he’d noticed were in short supply during his treatment there for skin cancer.

Overcoming adversity is something he and his wife Mabel, have become adept at over 60 years of marriage.

Their daughter Thelma Klosinski explains: “It’s a bit of a sad story because my mum was in Dr Barnado’s homes down south. She hasn’t had a nice childhood like we did.

“She was in service round Ripon and she wanted to come back home and find her mam. She came back to Barrow and got a job working at the hospital where my dad was a painter and decorator.”

The couple went on to have five children and remain a close family to this day, with all the children living locally and visiting regularly.

Colin and Mabel celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in March at the Royal British Legion.
