Book to reveal secrets of garden festival

INSIGHT: Lord Hugh Cavendish will be signing copies of his new book at the Holker Garden Festival

ON the weekend of the 20th Holker Garden Festival, taking place from Friday June 8 to Sunday 10, Lord Cavendish will officially launch his book, A Time to Plant: Life and Gardening at Holker, with a book-signing session on each day of the festival.

At 11.30am in the Holker Festival Garden Theatre, visitors will have the opportunity to hear Lord Cavendish share extracts from his new book, describe the challenges of writing it and reveal the history of Holker and its magnificent gardens.

This will be followed by a half hour book-signing session with the chance to purchase your own copy of the book.

A Time to Plant is the story of a family, of a life, of a community, of continuity with the past and adaptation to the modern age.

Hugh Cavendish writes about the history of Holker, which dates back to the 16th century and has never been bought or sold but has passed by inheritance through the family line. He describes his own life, as a child at Holker (“when I look back I allow myself the indulgence of believing I was not quite as stupid as my schoolmasters held me to be; nor quite as lazy”) and later as the owner of Holker, finding a way of managing huge resources and responsibilities and also immense debt.

And, of course, he writes about the garden.

A Time to Plant; Life and Gardening at Holker is published by Frances Lincoln, with photography by Grania Cavendish.

The 2012 Holker Garden Festival opens at 10am to 5.30pm.
