Broughton "Good Samaritan" died helping others on A590

A WELL-KNOWN local footballer lay undiscovered for up to half-an-hour after he was killed during a multiple vehicle crash on the A590, an inquest heard.

The inquest for Stuart Shaw, 31, of Castlewray, Broughton, was held in Barrow Town Hall today.

The hearing, held by Cumbria South and East coroner Ian Smith, heard evidence Mr Shaw - a former Ulverston Rangers, Dalton United and Coniston player - stopped at the scene of an accident on Lindale Hill about 8am on January 19 last year.

He pulled over on the eastbound carriageway of the road after coming across a Vauxhall Corsa, which had crashed after hitting a patch of black ice.

Mr Shaw pulled over and got out of his car to try and warn approaching traffic there had been an accident.

However, another motorist - Michaela Webster, from Askam - lost control and slid into him, killing him and throwing him onto the roadside verge.

Miss Webster told the inquest she was not aware she had hit anyone.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Mr Smith said he was found about half-an-hour later, lying on the verge.

He said: "(He) did the Samaritan role to stop to see if he could help. Once he had stopped to assist the situation, he realised there was a potential danger to other people both in terms of the vehicle that was there and shouldn't have been and the road surface.

"He went back up the road waving his arms and trying to stop other people and trying to prevent them having accidents."

Aside from Miss Webster, one other car was seriously damaged when it slipped and crashed on the ice, and a number of other cars suffered minor damage in less serious collisions.

Have your say

Totally agree. This is a fully grown man that got hit by a car. Hope this gets looked into thoroughly for the sake of the family.
