February 14th

Ohhhhh yes, it's that day very soon...Valentine's day! Whether single, or in a relationship...or something in between, it's surely a day that always causes debate.

It's that time of year where we get our loved ones gifts and cards and some of us, to be honest, get spoilt, or go a bit crazy: Valentine's day.

Love it or hate it, it's back with a vengeance. For those who are single, it can of course, be a horrible day, full of reminders and regrets. Having been there myself in the past, I can genuinely sympathise; it can be awful. And escaping it is like trying to escape the christmas frenzy...impossible! So just treat it like another day. After all...it is.

Even IF we've managed to avoid the countless shop displays and canny sales assistants, we now get bombarded by couples, parties, banners on every website left, right and centre, and our inboxes clogged even more so than usual, with offers of 'for her' and 'for him's. It can be a nightmare. But fear not, it will soon go away, just another faded memory.

Luckily, I have to say, this year I’m in a relationship, with the girl of my dreams. I never get complacent and truly cherish every second we spend together. True, we’re not perfect. No couple is. But I truly LOVE her and would gladly shout it from the rooftops and I'm not too embarrassed to say that. So please, if you’re single, don't wish I get hit by a bus for saying that. Instead, let me assure you that we all find the love of our lives at some point. It may not be now, or even soon, but it will happen one day. And I'm no love struck, blinded fool. It’s just the way life is. We all find happiness in one form or another at some point. The shops may be annoying us, and it may be horrible to endure for some, but it is, after all, just another day.

So if you're down, try and think positive and if you're positive already...great! Personally (and I know I'm biased) I'm looking forward to Valentine's this year..and that's not because of all the gift-giving and receiving, and the date itself. No. It's because of a much simpler reason, love. It's a beautiful, magical thing. Sure, it can cause hurt, grief, anger, even wars...but it’s what makes us human. And for those who moan Valentine’s Day is too commercialised etc...so what? Shops try and profit, it's what they do. Just forget the 'stuff' and enjoy what you have, not what you don't have.

A wise person once said 'There's always someone worse off than yourself.' and never has a truer word been spoken. So relax, enjoy it...and if, for whatever reason you can't enjoy it, forget it and think of something that makes you smile. Love can happen anywhere, anytime. :)

Have your say

I don't celebrate Valentine's myself to be honest and I think you're right - it really isn't anything for people to get worked up about :)
