A MAN who was arrested last night on suspicion of making threats to kill people attending an LGBT event in Barrow remains in custody today.

Police initially warned people to stay away from the area for their own safety while they investigated threats made to the event.

Armed police were sent to the New Empire, Dalton Road where the LGBT event was taking place.

Later police said they had arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of threats to kill.

A police statement said: "A 19-year-old man from Barrow was arrested on suspicion of threats to kill and is now being taken to police custody.

"Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident."

Superintendent Mark Pannone said: “I would like to thank everyone for their assistance and vigilance tonight. Cumbria Police’s priority is always to keep people safe. There is now no threat to anyone or any specific group in the south Cumbria area.”

Earlier in the evening police had advised people to reconsider attending the event.

The earlier police statement said:"Police have received intelligence tonight that a man is planning to attack people attending an LGBT event at New Empire, Dalton Road, Barrow, tonight.

"Police are urging people who were planning to attend to let their friends know, and consider staying at home instead as a precaution.

"Armed police are in the area as a precaution."
