Train services north of Carlisle appear unlikely to resume today.

Virgin Trains has confirmed that it does not expect to run services between Carlisle and Scotland for the remainder of Friday.

There are no replacement buses either due to the continued adverse weather conditions.

Customers who have booked to travel to or from Glasgow or Edinburgh can travel on any Scotland services until Sunday, the operator has confirmed.

Transpennine Express services have been suspended north of Preston. Scotrail and Northern Rail services are also off.

There is also major disruption on the East Coast with no Virgin Train services north of Newcastle.

A Virgin Trains spokesperson said: "On our east coast route, due to extreme weather conditions we continue to advise customers not to travel today. We are unable to run any services north of Newcastle.

"For customers you would prefer to postpone their travel, tickets will be also valid for your journey on any Virgin Trains East Coast service between Saturday 3rd March and Wednesday 7th March inclusive.

"On our west coast route, we do not expect to run services between Carlisle and Scotland for the rest of today. Customers who have booked to travel to or from Edinburgh or Glasgow can travel on any Scotland services until Sunday 4th March. Alternatively, if customers travelling to or from Scotland would prefer to cancel their journey, refunds will be given without any fee being charged.

"We are working hard to look after our customers in whatever way we can and ticket restrictions on both routes have been lifted today, so customers who do decide to travel can do so on any service, but to check our websites for the most up to date information before setting off."

Virgin Trains has relaxed its ticket restrictions. Anyone with tickets for today are free to travel on any Virgin Trains service.

Network Rail has been unable to clear routes.

It is unclear when the situation will improve.

Customers are urged to check before travelling to stations on Saturday morning.
