THIS week's Property of the Week is a stunning Ulverston home with masses of space inside and out, as SUSAN GOODSON discovered.

IT was in 1994 when walking past a real estate agents window that Elizabeth Marr-Smith saw that the house she had played in as a child and loved was for sale.

Now with two children of her own she knew it would make a wonderful family home with masses of space both inside and out in the grounds.

The house - Red Gables, 2 Mayfield Road, Ulverston - is in a sought-after residential location and offers the chance of buying an outstanding spacious detached family home set in extensive garden grounds. The house has a garden front with in-out drive access to the garage and house, entrance hall, ground floor wash room, lounge, living room, dining room, conservatory, study, kitchen, utility room and side porch. To the first floor are five bedrooms with en-suite bathroom to the master room and a separate family shower room.

To the side and back of the property are extensive mature gardens that have been beautifully maintained with seating and patio area giving access to a very pleasant summer house which is ideal for a variety of uses.

Although bought in 1994, the Marr-Smith family did not live in it until 2000 after returning to Britain. Since then it has been the scene of many big family gatherings, friends getting together and once old enough, the perfect base for teenagers getting ready for a night out. Although its location is quiet and private, it is within easy walking distance of Ulverston town centre so proved to be popular with her son and daughter’s friends.

Talking about her home, Elizabeth said: “When I was 10 I spent a lot of time playing in the house, which was the home of one of my school friends.

“It had two staircases, which I was always impressed by.

“Despite its size, one of the first things we did after buying it was extend the cellar and put a conservatory on top so we could appreciate the garden.

“The kitchen was two rooms until we knocked through and made it into one with an island unit and a breakfast bar.

“It is a lovely cosy place in the winter despite its size.”

It is also open to the living room while the beautiful generous lounge has an open arch to the dining room. Off the dining room is a very handy walk-in cupboard.

“I am actually freshening up some of the rooms at the moment and neutralising them, but whenever I think about the lounge I always think I would only go for something very similar to what it is now so I am going to leave it,” Elizabeth added.

The house also has a large study which has been used by everyone over the years including acting as a music room with guitars and violins finding a place there.

Of the five bedrooms, the fourth and fifth are of a similar size and side-by-side. They could easily be converted into a bedroom with its own dressing room.

The master bedroom has a stunning en-suite that is more like a full-sized bathroom with a jacuzzi bath, WC, wash basin and separate shower cubicle.

The lounge has double doors which lead directly out to the huge garden at the back of the house. The long lawn is just made for children to play in. The barbecue area overlooks the lawn and is a haven for adults and children to enjoy.

Elizabeth said: “There is a summer house at the end of the garden with electricity and lighting. The children used it all the time as their own space when they were teenagers, but it could easily be converted into a gym, sewing room or office.”

As Elizabeth’s daughter lives abroad at the moment and her son is moving out soon, the house is far too big for two, let alone one, which is why it is now on the market.

The house - Red Gables, 2 Mayfield Road, Ulverston - is on the market for offers in the region of £699,950 with Ross Estate Agencies. For further details please call the agent’s Ulverston office on 01229 582889 or drop in to 25 King Street, Ulverston.
