More General Election candidates have been confirmed for Cumbrian constituencies, with the deadline now just over a week away.

Labour announced yesterday that Lola McEvoy had been selected to stand in Penrith and The Border, while the Greens will field Jack Lenox in Copeland and Jill Perry in Workington.

However the Liberal Democrats have yet to confirm any candidates for the four north and west Cumbria constituencies, while Ukip have still to announce candidates for west Cumbria.

Parties have until May 11 to put forward names for the General Election on June 8.

All of Cumbria’s existing MPs – Carlisle’s John Stevenson, Workington’s Sue Hayman, Copeland’s Trudy Harrison, Penrith and the Border’s Rory Stewart, South Lakes’ Tim Farron and Barrow’s John Woodcock – have already confirmed they will defend their seats.

Labour are fielding journalism graduate Ms McEvoy in Penrith and The Border, where Conservative Minister Mr Stewart currently holds the county’s biggest majority.

A former Newcastle University student, she is now senior communications and campaigns manager at the Living Wage Foundation.

She has previously worked as campaign organiser for the Labour Party and volunteered as a women’s officer.

In Carlisle, Labour have confirmed city councillor Ruth Alcroft will take on sitting Conservative MP Mr Stevenson.

Ukip have also confirmed 2015 candidate Fiona Mills will run again, and the Greens have re-selected their 2015 candidate, Helen Davison.

In Workington, the Conservatives are pinning their hopes on Clark Vasey, a Cumbrian corporate affairs manager now living in London, to take the seat from Labour’s Mrs Hayman.

The Greens are again fielding their 2015 candidate Mrs Perry in the constituency.

The Copeland battle looks set to be a repeat of the recent by-election, with new Conservative MP Mrs Harrison again facing Labour’s Gillian Troughton, who hopes to reverse her historic defeat earlier this year.

The Greens will also be fielding their by-election candidate Mr Lenox.

He said: “We had a vote on Thursday night and I’m happy to have been selected for Copeland.”

Cockermouth town councillor and health campaigner Rebecca Hanson, who was the Liberal Democrat candidate at the by-election, has said she is interested in running again, but no selection has yet taken place.

Miss Mills stood for Ukip in the February by-election but, having already been confirmed for Carlisle, the party will have to find another candidate for Copeland in the next week.

To date no independent candidates have put themselves forward.
