THE parents of a five-year-old school boy with autism have been invited to write a special blog about the Lake District after their social media posts captured some rare moments of their son enjoying the great outdoors.

Stephen and Bettina Evans from Millom recently began documenting their son Jesse's adventures across social media in the hopes of raising awareness of autism spectrum disorder.

Jesse's Autism Adventures has attracted a number of followers from across the world and helped the family to create a close-knit online community, as well as helping show the wider community what day to day life can be like for someone living with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Following a visit to Tarn Hows in the heart of the Lakes, tourism site Go Lakes asked the family if they would write a personal piece about the benefits the Lake District National Park can bring.

Mr Evans, of Seathwaite Close, Millom said: "The staff want us to do a piece as our visit to the Lakes has been getting a lot of attention.

"We are going to write a blog to promote the area and identify the benefits of what the area brings to people with autism.

"Jesse doesn't generally walk outdoors due to sensory overload as he struggles with sounds and smells but we went to Tarn Hows and he walked the full lap of the lake."

The 39 year-old also praised the support his family has been getting since the creation of Jesse's Facebook page.

'Magical' lives to be showcased as Millom bids to become autism friendly community

He added: "We started with around 500 - 600 followers and now we have 1200 from as far as India, The Philippines, and the USA.

"We are constantly getting messages asking for help with strategies and we have had people with autism asking us for help and we have set up a closed support group too."

Sue Clarke, Sales and Marketing Manager at Cumbria Tourism said: "The Lake District is a world class visitor destination that is open all year round and here for everyone to enjoy.

"We were therefore delighted to hear from the Evans family who got in touch to share with us what the area means to their son Jesse, and the positive impact the landscape and local environment has on their lives."
