The sprawling grounds of Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire were set up with underwater tunnels, climbing walls and other military-style obstacles as it played host to 100 inspirational women.

The Tough Mums event, which is organised by ITV's Good Morning Britain, is open to mothers - or mother figures - who  have played a vital part in the upbringing of children, or been an inspiration or role model to others.

As the seriously physical challenge returned for 2016, there were two Barrow mum selected from the thousands of applicants and they battled through the obstacles in the same way they have faced multitudes of obstacles in their own lives.

Donna Duff and Rachel Tagimuri, both 46, were both selected to take part in the 'Tough Mums' challenge this May and they represented the town splendidly.

Donna and Rachel both live and work in Barrow and when they saw the ITV advertisement, they knew they were made for it. Both have recently overcome huge obstacles in their lives and are a constant support to friends and family.

The Tough Mums event is designed to get strong women together from all over Britain and to have a bit of fun in teams whilst taking part in a fitness challenge.

ITV were looking for women who have proved themselves to be made of strong stuff, through life experiences, challenges they’ve overcome or simply what they have to balance in their day to day lives.

The teams were led by a number of celebrities including Susannah Reid, Kate Garroway, Richard Arnold, Ben Shephard, Ranvir Singh, Dr Hilary Jones and Sinitta (Simon Cowell's ex).

Rachel's team was led by Sean Fletcher, the sports presenter from Good Morning Britain and Donna's team was led by TV presenter Julia Bradbury.

The ladies endured obstacles such as the 'Arctic Enema' which was a muddy pool filled with ice cubes, which Rachel admitted was her least favourite obstacle and an underwater tunnel made from car tyres which was unpopular with both Barrow mums.

Rachel and Donna have admitted to struggling with very difficult experiences over the past year and the pair threw themselves in to the new challenge with vigour and determination. Donna said: "It was a pleasure to mingle with all the other inspirational ladies and an honour to be chosen as one of them. Julia Bradbury was absolutely amazing, she was so kind and helpful, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it."

Women attended from the highlands of Scotland and the city of London but the Barrow ladies recognised each other immediately, even though they had not previously met. Rachel said: "It was great to bump in to Donna. I think it's amazing that two mums were selected from Barrow from the thousands who applied.

"My husband and daughter Hope came to support me on the day, they were so proud and I loved the whole challenge. I've kept in contact with my team and we are hoping to have a reunion."
