Organisers of Europe's biggest open water swimming event have announced that its schedule on Sunday in the Lake District has been cancelled due to fears about the weather.

Tomorrow's programme of events is set to go ahead as planned but forecasts show that Windermere could be hit by strong gusting winds on Sunday.

Organisers of the Great North Swim say they are unsuitable for open water swimming.

Anyone who is due to swim Sunday is being offered the chance to take part tomorrow instead.

Those able to swim on Saturday instead of Sunday are urged to check their emails for full details of their new swim times.

Anyone unable to swim on Saturday will be offered a full refund of their entry fee.

Refund details will be issued early next week via email to participants.

A statement on the Great North Swim's website says: "We’re sorry to advise that the Sunday programme for the Great North Swim on 11 June 2017 has been cancelled. The Saturday programme will still go ahead as planned."

It adds: "We understand this will be disappointing to those planning on swimming on Sunday but your safety is our number one priority. Thanks for your understanding."
