AN eight-year-old boy became a hero for a day when he bravely stepped in to help his mother after she slipped and broke her leg.

Mrs Jackson, of Strathaird Avenue, Walney, instantly knew her right leg and ankle joint was broken as it was "pointing in the wrong direction" but did not know the name of the street she was on for the 999 operator..

Reece made it his mission to find out the name by firstly trying to flag cars down and, after that failed, running to find help.

Thankfully, the St Columba's pupil came across a man walking his dog who told Mrs Jackson the correct information to get paramedics to the scene.

Reece was presented with the Bouquet of the Week, and Mrs Jackson said she couldn't be prouder of her son.

The clinical support worker said: "He was just amazing. He kept me focused. He was talking the whole time despite the fact he was worried about me.

"He was over the moon to get the bouquet. He was really, really pleased."

The accident happened just before 7pm on Friday January 29 and after Mrs Jackson had dropped her daughter, Jessica, 11, off at girl guides.

Reece was nominated for the Bouquet of the Week by his grandmother, Pat Hughes.

Recalling what happened, Mrs Jackson said: "I just slipped and landed on the floor. I essentially knew I had broken it because it was pointing in the wrong direction.

"I went into my left hand pocket to get my phone but due to the movement of my leg the pain was horrendous.

"I couldn't remember the street we were on when I was talking to the emergency services. I was just in a mess.

"[Reece] said he'll find out the street. He tried to wave cars down. Nobody stopped. Then he managed to find a chap up the street who was walking his dog.

"Whatever he could have done he did do."
