Heroic police pair praised after saving man from sea

TWO heroic policemen have been commended for bravery after they dived into the sea to save a life.
Police chiefs say Special Constable Thomas Huck and PC Paul Kelly had little thought for their own safety as they tried to prevent a man from harming himself in the water off Askam.
On Thursday Chief Constable Craig Mackey presented the pair with commendations in recognition of their bravery and determination in challenging circumstances.
The incident unfolded on June 10 last year during the hours of darkness on the beach in Askam.
A man was threatening to harm himself and the officers were first to arrive on the scene.
They attempted to reason with him but he threw himself into the sea in the rapidly raising tide.
Despite the obvious risks to their own safety, SC Huck and PC Kelly jumped into the sea and managed to restrain the man and bring him to the shore with the help of the coastguard.
Thanks to their actions, the man was unharmed.
Chief Constable Craig Mackey said: “These awards highlight the dedication and bravery of the officers and staff of Cumbria Constabulary. Both Thomas and Paul demonstrated outstanding courage that was way above their call of duty.
“Both faced an incredibly challenging situation where they acted quickly and selflessly in order to save a life.
“I’m proud of all of our officers and am pleased to be able to acknowledge the professionalism and commitment of those who face dangerous and challenging situations during their day to day duties.”
