Course is achieving goal

SCHOOLCHILDREN enjoyed a day on the football pitch to boost their literacy schools.

Greengate Infant School is taking part in a literacy course with the help of Barrow AFC. The project, which aims to improve their writing and speaking skills, is run by Barrow AFC’s community initiative officer Craig Rutherford.

The pupils are halfway through the six-week course, which has seen them carry out a running commentary on football matches and writing up reports afterwards.

They also had the chance to role play and act as an interviewer or football manager.

Caroline Hoggarth, headteacher of the school, said: “The children have loved it and feedback from parents has been very positive. They have actually noticed their child’s literacy improving, which is great.”
