AS the days get shorter and the last of the summer sun loses its heat we have taken a look back in the Mail's archive to days of fun on the beach at Walney 15 years ago.
The mid-summer of 2003 was one to remember and the Mail's pages were filled with tips on how to prevent yourself from getting sunburnt.
North Scale beach was one of the favourite places to go for sun-seekers, swimmers and sand castle builders.
An article on July 15 noted: "Sun-soaked Barrow town centre was filled with summer shoppers as the temperature topped 25C.
"Bears, tigers and otters are beating the heat with frozen treats at Dalton's South Lakes Wild Animal Park."
Some of the food had been frozen in giant ice cubes — which was both cooling and fun for the animals to play with.
A spokesman for Ladbrokes at Barrow said no bets had been taken on the Furness heat reaching 100F (37.7C) despite odds of 33/1.
