It was feared that the cost of free bus rides for pensioners in South Lakeland would bust the council's budget.

A terraced house in Newcastle Street, Barrow, was offered for sale at £89,995. A semi-detached cottage at Broughton Beck, near Ulverston, was £210,000.

There was a £50,000 project to restore Ulverston's Ford Park to its former glory. It would include the planting of 70 new trees.

Talks were being held over a 6.5 per cent pay offer to shipyard workers at Barrow, which had been rejected once by trade union members.

25 YEARS AGO

A 2am drinks licence was granted to The Cry, on Cornwallis Street, Barrow. Owner Roger McKimm planned to spend £150,000 on improving the venue.

A speed survey and traffic count was to be carried out in Swarthmoor to see if a pelican crossing was suitable for the main A590 trunk trunk road through the village.

The Lakeland Motor Museum planned to use part of the old Dolly Blue works at Backbarrow for exhibits and to develop a garden centre and workshops. The washing products factory had been closed for more than 20 years.

Barrow Scout leader John Leadbetter, of the 17th Barrow St Perrin's Group, was presented with the Queen's Scout Certificate.

50 YEARS AGO

Barrow Chamber of Trade called on the Minister of Transport to develop Barrow docks as a potential site for factories.

The comics "Freddie Parrot" Face Davis and Ken Goodwin were among the stars to appear at a cabaret evening held at the 99 Club, in Dalkeith Street, Barrow.
