A WORLD of transport in miniature comes to Barrow next month as the Furness Model Railway Club holds its 56th exhibition.

The model railway and transport exhibition is being held at Barrow Sixth Form College on Saturday and Sunday, October 13 to 14, from 10am to 5pm.

To mark the event, we are taking a look back to the show which was held in 1998.

The Mail, on Monday, April 13, in 1998, noted: "Furness Model Railway Club, which organised the event, had a fabulous display called Boldon Junction, which was minutely detailed - right down to the flashing light on top of the model police car.

"Intercity trains, freight trains and steam engines were controlled around the tracks on the display, which is put on show all over the country.

"There was plenty of 'hand-on' fun too.

"Remote-controlled race cars sped around a treacherously twisty track, powered by excited children."

This year's show will feature at least 10 model railway layouts, trade stands and displays, such as the Furness Line Action Group, the Cumbrian Railways Association and the South Lakes Model Flying Club.

The model railway layouts due in October include Coppell, the Canalside Ironworks at Derbyshire, Clee Valley Railway and a nostalgic Triang model railway display.
