DOZENS of Barrow Scouts and Guides showed off their performing skills 20 years ago in a traditional Gang Show of songs, sketches and drama.
The event was recorded in The Mail on Monday, February 16, in 1998 and included a medley of hits by the rock band Queen.
The format of the Gang Show was devised by Ralph Reader, who also wrote the signature tune Crest of a Wave.
He was a Rover Scout and his first production, called The Gang’s All Here, was staged at the Scala Theatre, London, from October 30 in 1932.
Scouting founder Lord Robert Baden-Powell liked the show and it became an annual event and quickly spread beyond London.
Gang Shows provided both entertainment and a excellent shop window for Scout and Guide Groups in places like Barrow.
The production team and cast would write their own material, build scenery and make costumes and props.
Leaders and parents would help out behind the scenes.
