Drivers face further traffic misery on Walney

ROADWORKS have caused traffic chaos for a second successive day.
Temporary traffic lights at the Barrow end of Walney Bridge have caused gridlock for motorists.
By yesterday morning, the traffic delays had spread onto the island itself, causing back-ups on the Promenade and up Central Drive
The traffic was so bad that it took one taxi driver from Walney’s Avon Cars nearly half an hour to get from The George Pub to the traffic lights at the end of Central Drive.
Staff at Avon Cars have suffered another day of chaos and lost business because of the traffic.
The company, which lost over 70 jobs during the course of Tuesday morning, says it had to turn down even more business yesterday(25/11).
Taxi dispatcher Veronika Morsby said: “I’m tearing my hair out. It’s a good 20 minutes to half an hour wait to get the taxi to the customer, we’re still having to turn many jobs down.
“It’s taking an hour to get across the bridge, customers are having to get out and walk. Some have been getting to the bridge and asking the driver to turn round and take them home, because they know they’ve missed what they’re supposed to be doing.
“There’s road-rage going on, there’s people winding their windows down, beeping their horns, and the car at the front of the queue can’t go anywhere. It’s mayhem.”
A Cumbria County Council spokesman said: “Temporary traffic lights are sometimes required so work can take place in the road. We apologise for any inconvenience this is causing motorists.”

Don't forget, that in all this bickering over the new road works there was never any mention of the one horse of barrow ever being delayed, and this is what you are dealing with, the barrow council mind over matter management, we don't mind and you don't matter. Anyway, I think it will look very nice when finished, pointless but nice, in a roundabout sort of way.

Have your say
I would like to stand up for the "so-called selfish" drivers, who "push into" the inside lane after "overtaking" on the outside lane. I am by no means a selfish driver, nor am I a boy racer who likes to overtake and push in! I would count myself as an experienced and sensible driver, who instead of sitting in just one lane, (thus causing further tailbacks across the Hollywood Park roundabout and beyond), drive up the outside lane to help ease the congestion behind me. Perhaps if other drivers used their common sense about this, instead of just labelling us erratic drivers trying to push in, there may not be quite as much congestion on the roundabout! Also, if the outside lane isn't to be used, why would the council have bothered putting it there in the first place!
