A TERROR suspect who allegedly planned to kill people at a gay pride night in Barrow has appeared at the UK’s highest crown court.

Ethan Stables appeared at the Old Bailey, also known as the Central Criminal Court, today via video link. The 19-year-old appeared before judge Mr Justice Holroyde at the London court.

The defendant, who is currently detained at Wandsworth Prison in London, spoke politely as he confirmed his name.

He was wearing a prison issue grey top and appeared calm throughout the 30-minute hearing. Stables was represented by Ms Rebecca Nieto, while the prosecution barrister was Ms Jane Stansfield.

Stables is yet to enter a plea after he was charged with collecting or making a record of information of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism, or possessing a document of that kind.

The charge was brought against Stables after police received intelligence that suggested a terrorist attack was being planned against people attending a gay pride night at the New Empire in Barrow on Friday June 23.

Stables was arrested the same night and his flat at Egerton Court on Barrow Island was raided by police. The case was adjourned until August 11 when Stables will appear again at the Old Bailey.

The New Empire is set to host its first gay pride event since the alleged incident this Saturday from noon and the great and good of Barrow have thrown their support behind the LGBT community.

At a meeting on Tuesday, all members of Barrow Borough Council united in their pledge to protect everyone from discrimination.
