Cumbrian mum turns jewellery hobby into business
Last updated at 16:54, Friday, 04 May 2012
A hobby that turned into a passion has transformed into a business for a Cumbrian mum.
Tracey Glasson has opened handmade jewellery AA Gems in Carlisle’s covered market.
The business also sells handmade gifts from other Cumbrian craftspeople, including knitted toys by Gwen Wharton, of Great Orton.
Tracey, of Hallbankgate, near Brampton, began making jewellery six years to kill the boredom while her husband was working away.
As she perfected her craft she began selling her pieces at craft shows.
“The shows have really dried up since the recession,” Tracey told The Cumberland News.
“Craftspeople are struggling now to find anywhere to sell their stuff.”
She added: “The market seemed like the perfect place for me to able to sell my jewellery and also offer space to other crafters. It’s a really thriving place and I’ve got a decent spot, close the cafe and the baby shop, so I’m hoping to be busy.
“With the recession, people are looking for affordable gifts.”
Tracey specialises in gemstone necklaces and pendants and also produces wedding tiaras.
The business offers a jewellery repair service and Tracey hosts children’s parties.
