A BARROW school has helped get the community into the Christmas spirit and raised £1,500 for two charities.

Furness Academy created a festive wonderland with its Christmas craft fair.

Families visited Father Christmas and his elves in Santa's Grotto, listened to carols performed by Furness Academy's student and staff choir, and made Christmas present purchases from the a variety of almost 50 stalls.

The stalls sold a range of local arts and crafts, jewellery, festive items such as Christmas wreaths and refreshments. A tombola stall selling chocolate prizes made more than £300 in funds.

Furness Academy is donating the £1,500 to Team Jake, for the Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group, and the Make a Wish Foundation.

Students of the Park Drive school helped to run the event and welcome visitors.

Furness Academy has received lots of messages complimenting its "amazing and extremely helpful students, who are a credit to the school".

On Christmas Jumper Day, on December 16, students and staff will be donning their festive wool wear in aid of Team Jake for the Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group.
